Pain

Hand over my mouth, knife to my throat, you catch me by surprise.
I never saw you lurking in the shadows. Who let you through the door?
Once you were in, you worked so quickly to take over, what was it like before you?

With you, you brought cruelty and malice.
I of course had heard of you before and thought I knew your face.
But those were merely your shadows.
You have shown yourself. Your true self is more powerful than i had imagined.

Now your hooks, deepen into my flesh, terrorizing.
I know you’re there but your source eludes my desperate hunt..
Instead you intrude into every moment, turning even dull moments into your show.

Your vice is vanity, and it’s fueled by attention.
Which you use as an invitation to push roots deeper into my flesh and mind.
Until you have me, harnessed, tethered, the reins belonging only to you.

When relief comes and my thoughts wander from you, your jealousy is without hesitation.
You are quick to deliver vengeance, and to remind me of my place
My light of hope is extinguished, I’m left with pock marks where light dared to flicker.

I know you must leave eventually.  Most of your kind do.
But the hope comes at a price i am sick of paying.
I know you must leave eventually.  You must.  Right?
